Donald Kearns, M.D., M.M.M.

President and Chief Executive Officer

  • He grew up in The Swamp.
  • In his spare time, he runs, cycles, travels and enjoys good wine.
  • He volunteers for Challenged Athletes, Pedal for the Cause, Teach for America, San Diego Zoo, Make a Wish Foundation and Children’s Initiative.
  • He celebrates his 30th year at Rady Children’s next year.

Stephen Kingsmore, M.D., D.Sc.

President and CEO, Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine

  • He grew up in Northern Ireland, 5 miles from Bushmills (where the whisky is from).
  • In his spare time, he runs on the beach with his dog.
  • He collects publications and degrees.
  • He volunteers at the Rock Church.
  • He has traveled almost 2 million miles with American Airlines and has memorized nearly every major airport they fly through.
  • His colorful sock collection was his wife’s idea, and now lots of people give him really cool socks.

Margareta E. Norton

Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer

  • She was born at a very early age in Stockholm, Sweden.
  • She loves Cowboys and Indians.
  • She completed her first half marathon at the age of 60 in record time.
  • She knows all the words to Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.

Nicholas Holmes, M.D., M.B.A.

Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

  • He grew up in Washington, D.C.
  • In his spare time, he runs along the beach in Carlsbad.
  • During medical school, he was an actor in several local car insurance commercials on the local independent TV stations.
  • He just learned to play the ukulele five years ago.

Kathleen Cain

Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

  • She grew up in Ohio and Indiana.
  • In her spare time, she cooks, gardens, knits, reads, travels and sits at the beach.
  • She collects books—she loves to read!
  • She volunteers for pediatric healthcare in Ethiopia, the American Cancer Society and Healthcare Financial Managers Association.
  • She has 18 grandchildren, has made her own goat cheese and likes to can vegetables she has grown.
  • Many of her friends in high school were circus performers since she lived in Peru, Ind., the Circus Capital of the World. Her sister was in a high-wire act, and she still loves trapeze & silks.

Charles B. Davis, M.D.

  • He was born in Cambridge, MA and is a New Englander to the core
  • He served as a pediatrician in the Navy for 26 years
  • He spends free time with his family and enjoys traveling, hiking, running and skiing
  • He qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon in 2009

Stephen Jennings

  • He has been on archaeological digs in Israel, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Greece and Turkey.
  • He worked his way through college as a chef.
  • He met and married his wife in London.

Irvin A. Kaufman, M.D.

Senior Vice President, Health Affairs

  • He grew up in Louisville, Ky., with much of that time spent on his uncle Nate’s farm in nearby Anchorage and Pee Wee Valley.
  • In his spare time, he makes things out of wood like outdoor furniture, bookcases and tables.
  • He volunteers for Ronald McDonald Charities (he is on the Board).
  • He has four children and 3 1/2 grandchildren – “All of whom will be better looking, smarter and cooler than I ever was.”
  • He once had both a radio and TV show called “The Doctor Buzz Show.” It got bumped off the air by “The Doctor Laura Show.”

Gail Knight, M.D.

  • She grew up in Sylmar, Calif.
  • In her spare time, she spends time with her grandchildren.
  • She collects Race Bling.
  • She has done five marathons and 30+ half marathons in the last five years, including two Disney Dopeys.

Mary Fagan, Ph.D., R.N., NEA-BC

Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Officer

  • She grew up in St. Louis.
  • In her spare time, she  travels, cooks, hikes and spends time with family and friends.
  • She volunteers at Make-a-Wish Foundation.
  • She has participated in roller derby “lite.”

  • She had worked at Rady Children’s for three years when her first daughter was born.
  • She gained a whole new understanding of the passion and mission when the CHET Team transported her daughter from her pediatrician’s office to the NICU at 2 days old.
  • After a stay of over two weeks at three different units, she finally brought her baby home.
  • Her home is where her heart is … right here at Rady Children’s!

Albert Oriol

Vice President and Chief Information Officer

  • He grew up in Catalonia – look it up!
  • In his spare time, he plays with his son, travels, plays, coaches and watches rugby, reads, writes, plays the guitar and cooks.
  • He collects Rugby jerseys.
  • He volunteers for Southern California Youth Rugby, OMBAC Wallabies Youth Rugby, College of Health Information Management Executives and San Diego Health Connect.
  • He spent a year in Michigan as an exchange student, used to dub educational videos from Catalan to English and wrote a book on healthcare in a digital world in his late 20s.

Barbara Ryan

Vice President, Government Affairs

  • She grew up in Yuma, Arizona.
  • Prior to coming to Rady Children’s 26 years ago, she served as the chief of staff for a state senator.
  • She is Rady Children’s first and only Government Relations Officer.
  • She is an elected official, having served on a local board of education for 37 years.
  • What little spare time she has is devoted to her six children and 17 grandchildren.
  • She loves to dance!

  • She was a pediatric nurse at Boston Children’s Hospital before beginning her career as an attorney.
  • She was a professional singer in Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Festival Chorus.
  • She put herself through Boston College as a nursing assistant and wedding singer.
