Dr. David Chao is a board-certified pediatrician and pediatric emergency medicine specialist in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego.

He earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed both his pediatrics residency and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He worked with a physician's group in Las Vegas, Nevada prior to starting his academic career at Rady Children's.

Dr. Chao's clinical and research interests include pediatric mental health emergencies, global health, medical education, and complementary and alternative medicine. He has participated in global health and disaster relief initiatives in Japan, China, Botswana, and Haiti. He participates on the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Selection Committee as well as the Behavioral Health Collaborative at Rady Children's.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Chao enjoys scuba diving, photography (both above and under water), painting, international travel, gastronomy, camping, his two imperial shih-tzus and poker.
