Kids With Two Moms or Two Dads
Some kids live with two moms or two dads. Why? Because some people have romantic feelings for someone who is the same sex or gender. (Your sex or gender means whether you are a boy or a girl.)
Two women (called lesbians) can become a couple. Or two gay men might fall in love. And just like when a man and woman fall in love, these couples might want to make a life together that includes children.
Other kids might have a mom and a dad, or just a mom or a dad, or they might live with someone other than a parent, such as a grandmother. You probably know different kinds of families.
Of course, you need a man and a woman to make a baby. But people become parents in different ways. For instance, a gay couple might adopt a baby.
Most kids don’t have two moms or two dads, so it might seem a little different. But many kids do live with a gay parent or parents — a number that will likely get bigger now that gay marriage is legal in the United States.
Kids do best when they have one or more loving people who take good care of them. The good news is that those loving people can be a mom and a dad, a single parent, a gay couple, or even someone who isn’t a mom or a dad, like a grandma.
You might know someone at school who has gay parents. Be kind and respectful. Avoid making fun of someone’s family. Or maybe you have gay parents. Are people curious or ask questions? That’s OK. What seems different to them is just normal to you, so it’s a chance to talk about families. Parents might look different, but they’re all trying to do the same thing: to love and care for kids so they grow up healthy and happy.
