Bio

Dr. V. Salil Upasani is director of the International Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Hip Disorders at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego and an associate clinical professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Before treating hip disorders, Dr. Upasani graduated summa cum laude from the University of California, Los Angeles with highest departmental honors in physiological sciences and a specialization in business administration. He subsequently attended medical school and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at UC San Diego. During this time, he received funding from the National Institutes of Health to be the Ruth L. Kirschstein research fellow at Rady Children's, where he developed a passion for pediatric hip and spine conditions. Dr. Upasani then completed his fellowship in pediatric orthopedics at Boston Children's Hospital.

Dr. Upasani treats all general pediatric orthopedic conditions, with a special interest in hip and spine disorders in children, adolescents and young adults. He is also working to develop a center at Rady Children's to treat congenital and developmental hip and spine disorders in physiologically young and active adult patients. Dr. Upasani's research areas include scoliosis, spondylolysis, hip dysplasia, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, femoroacetabular impingement and hip preservation. Besides treating hip disorders and hip conditions, his work has been published in orthopedic journals, and he has received numerous research grants and awards from national and international organizations.

In addition to helping with pediatric hip disorders, Dr. Upasani is a member of the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America, the American Orthopedic Association Emerging Leaders Program (AOA-ELP), the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and Scoliosis Research Society.

His interests outside of medicine/pediatric hip disorders include golf, hiking and traveling, but he spends most of his free time running after his three children.
