Day Surgery Center

The Day Surgery Center at Rady Children's combines sophisticated surgical capabilities in an atmosphere that welcomes and reassures young patients and their families. The Center includes:

• four operating suites
• a dermatology suite with candela laser
• two induction rooms
• Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU -- phase one & two)
• a clubhouse playroom
• a parent waiting room

The Center's four operating suites are equipped with a full range of surgical instruments designed for the small patient, as well as an experienced staff of anesthesiologists, nurses and technicians.

Pre-Operative Orientation

This program helps familiarize children and their families with the Day Surgery Center. Children meet the staff, tour the facility, play with masks, gowns, stethoscopes, etc., and watch a video, all of which reduce pre-surgery anxiety.

Waiting Rooms

A large waiting room adjacent includes a clubhouse for children, where young patients and siblings can play in a friendly atmosphere while awaiting surgery. A separate, quiet waiting room is available for parents.

Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

Phase One PACU has eight stations, including one isolation or quiet room. Nurses monitor patients closely during the post-operative phase. Phase two PACU can accommodate up to 18 children awaiting discharge. Click here for the virtual tour.

Overnight Observation

Children who require continual observation but don't need to be admitted with an inpatient status are admitted to the surgical floor for a stay of less than 24 hours.
