Rady Children's Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Center provides consultation and accepts referrals of patients with disorders of growth, thyroid, adrenal function, pubertal development, calcium/bone metabolism and lipids. The staff evaluates and treats patients with diseases that affect the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal glands or gonads. In addition, they also evaluate and treat children with diabetes mellitus and hypoglycemia. The following services are offered:

  • Consultation and comprehensive care for children and adolescents with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus. The diabetes service is a multidisciplinary team consisting of physicians, certified diabetes nurse educators, dieticians and social workers.
  • Continuous ambulatory glucose monitoring.
  • Insulin pump therapy.
  • Program for growth hormone replacement and treatment of children with growth hormone deficiency, Turner's syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, chronic renal insufficiency, intrauterine growth retardation, and idiopathic short stature.
  • Program for treatment of primary IGF-1 deficiency
  • Evaluation and treatment of children with early or delayed pubertal development, gynecomastia, galactorrhea or ambiguous genitalia.
  • Consultation and treatment with calcium abnormalities, metabolic bone disorders or osteoporosis.
  • Program for adolescent girls with hyperandrogenemia, polycystic ovarian syndrome, or irregular menses.
  • Evaluation and treatment of children with abnormal thyroid function tests, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goiter, thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer.
  • Consultation and treatment for adrenal insufficiency, Cushing syndrome or congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
  • Evaluation of children with obesity, insulin resistance or the metabolic syndrome

Endocrinology provides inpatient, outpatient and physician phone consultation and will see patients on a routine or emergency basis.
