Infectious Disease Services

A team of physicians board-certified in pediatric infectious diseases operates the Infectious Disease Division at Rady Children's. These physicians assist the practitioner in the management of serious, complicated or unusual infections in children and are able to assume primary responsibility for evaluation and monitoring of children while on therapy. The Infectious Disease Division includes:

  • Infectious disease diagnosis, management and prevention.
  • Inpatient and outpatient consultation.
  • Specialized lab testing and interpretation of results to maximize the laboratory's role in infectious disease diagnosis.
  • Clinical research, including new antibiotics, antifungal and antiviral therapy, as well as investigational treatment with immune modulators and laboratory research.

The Infectious Disease Division also is an integral part of the teaching program of the UCSD School of Medicine with the participation of medical students, pediatric residents and pediatric infectious diseases fellows.

Pediatric Infectious Disease outpatient clinics meet once or twice weekly for new patient evaluations and follow-up visits of children seen previously in the Hospital or the Clinic. However, practitioners wishing to refer children with acute, problematic infections may do so any day of the week.
