Solid Organ Transplant Program
In 2001, the University of California San Diego (UCSD) brought its established pediatric abdominal transplant program and renowned transplant team to Rady Children’s in a combined effort to provide transplant patients in the San Diego region with the highest level of care. With UCSD’s proven excellence in transplantation and Rady Children’s nationally recognized treatment and healing environment, the two organizations have created a program that parallels the best in the United States.
A Proven Record of Success
UCSD’s Abdominal Transplant Program has achieved many milestones over the years, beginning in 1968 with San Diego County’s first kidney transplants in children and adults. In the early 1990s, the program added the region’s first liver transplants to its list of achievements. These transplant experts have brought their timeline of success to Rady Children’s, having performed more than 200 pediatric kidney transplants and over 30 liver transplants with excellent success rates and outcomes.
Transplantation is the answer for children with chronic kidney or liver disease looking to return to a more normal, healthy life. It offers freedom from the restrictions of dialysis, multiple injections and blood transfusions. It offers relief from fatigue and weakness and helps to cure the isolation they often feel.
