Cochlear Implants

Cochlear implants are devices used to transmit sound information directly to the auditory nerve in cases of profound hearing loss where benefit from hearing aids is severely limited. As with hearing aids, cochlear implants do not return a person with hearing loss to a state of normal hearing, but, for certain candidates, there is a vast improvement in auditory function.

The following team members are involved in identifying suitable candidates for cochlear implantation:

  • Otologist
  • Audiologist
  • Speech-Language pathologist
  • Developmental psychologist
  • Educator liaison
  • Educator consultant
  • Child's educator
  • Social worker (optional)

This team approach also helps ensure that support systems are in place for those who receive implants. Cochlear implantation is a process that doesn't end right after the surgery. One must be prepared to learn how to use the device and interpret the new kind of stimuli an implant provides.
