Ernest Hahn Critical Care Center
The Ernest Hahn Critical Care Center at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego is fully equipped for the medical and surgical demands of critically ill and injured children.
We are a national leader in pediatric survival rates (based on a statistical analysis of comparative mortality outcomes). When children are critically ill or injured, Rady Children’s is the best place for them to be.
The Center consists of a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), an intermediate intensive care unit and a cardiovascular intensive care unit, which opened in August 2013. Each year, about 1,200 children come through our PICU, and another 2,200 children are admitted to our Intermediate ICU.
Common injuries and illnesses treated include:
- Respiratory failure (asthma, pneumonia, etc)
- Shock (sepsis, dehydration, etc)
- Multi-organ system failure
- Near drownings
- Post-operative cardiac surgical care
- Post-operative neurosurgical care
The Center provides state-of-the-art care for children who need constant observation or advanced life support. It is staffed 24/7 by a specially trained team of pediatric critical care physicians, nurses and respiratory therapists.
