Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I know if my child should see a developmental-behavioral pediatrician?
A. A developmental-behavioral pediatrician can assess your child for developmental, learning or behavioral concerns. We include medical, behavioral and social assessment in the evaluation in order to help you understand your child. For example, some medical conditions such as genetic disorders and prematurity can lead to developmental or behavioral problems. We have expertise in counseling, treatment, and ongoing monitoring of chronic problems. In addition, we can direct you to resources to support your child’s optimal development and behavior.
Q. What can I expect if I make an appointment for my child?
A. The comprehensive evaluation may last up to 2½ hours and may take place over more than one visit. We usually ask you to provide report cards, teacher narratives, parent and teacher rating questionnaires, copies of prior evaluations, and medical records prior to your child’s visit. During the first part of the evaluation, we will discuss your concerns and review all pertinent developmental and medical history. During the second part, we will discuss our assessment and recommendations with you. Follow-up visits (30 minutes long) may be scheduled. Our goal is to have your child’s primary provider coordinate care once an effective plan is in place.
Q. How long does it take to schedule an appointment?
A. New evaluation appointments are generally available in one to three months. There is increased demand for appointments at the beginning of the school year, after school grading periods, and towards the end of the school year.
