The Children’s Program of San Diego Hospice, a collaborative effort of Rady Children’s and San Diego Hospice, is dedicated to providing compassionate care to infants, children and adolescents with life-threatening illnesses who wish to be cared for at home. Hospice services enable family members to spend their time living life to the fullest.

Through educational and support programs, parents are given the tools to confidently care for their child at home. Family members also gain a sense of control over their own lives, finding strength and hope within the context of the child’s care.

There are three distinctive components of the children’s program:

  • Pediatric Hospice Care
Professional staff with training in pediatrics provide interdisciplinary care for children (0-21 years old) with a life-threatening illness.
  • Children of Adult Hospice Patients
The San Diego Hospice Children’s Program staff work with children in families of adult hospice patients, supporting them through the experience of a serious illness of their loved one.
  • Children’s Outreach
The Children’s Program works with local schools, faculty, students and parents as a resource for training and education in the areas of coping with serious illness, grief and loss.

The Children’s Program is participating in several local, regional, state, national and international initiatives and projects to set standards for pediatric hospice care. They are also working to improve access to hospice care for pediatric patients.

Known as a model in the United States, the Children’s Program of San Diego Hospice frequently receives requests for consultation and guidance. Their reputation among other pediatric facilities is growing. For questions about the Children's Hospice program, please contact the Medical Director, Dr. Tanya Dansky.
