Rady Children’s Pain Services address both acute pain and chronic pain. Pain is an unpleasant sensory and or emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. It might indicate that something is wrong, and is the body’s way of sending a warning to your brain.
Acute pain can be severe and come on quickly, but usually lasts a short time – typically less than week. This pain is often caused by disease, trauma or surgery. When the cause of the acute pain has been treated, or the injury has healed, the pain disappears.
Chronic pain persists, lasting for weeks, months or years. Common chronic pain complaints include headache, low back pain, cancer pain and neurogenic pain (pain resulting from nerve damage).
Pain management typically involves a multidisciplinary team that may include anesthesiologists, neurologists, physical therapists, clinical psychologists and other medical professionals that address physiological as well as psychological issues.
