What Our Research Means for Kids
Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego is committed to discovering treatments and cures for childhood diseases. Through our affiliation with the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and other world-class research institutions, children benefit from basic, clinical and translational research -- and from the best minds in medicine working together.
In cancer research, for example, Rady Children's, UC San Diego and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital are collaborating on the causes and treatments of childhood cancer, advancing medical knowledge and working toward the ultimate goal of improving cure rates. Rady Children’s is also part of the Children’s Oncology Group, the largest pediatric clinical trial organization in the world helping children with cancer.
In our Neurology Division, physician-scientists are using genome sequencing to identify mutations in rare and undiagnosed conditions, in which the brain does not develop or function properly. Recently, Joseph Gleeson, M.D., discovered a mutation as the cause of a potentially treatable form of autism. For more on this groundbreaking research, watch the video below and read the article in Time magazine.
At the Pediatric Diabetes Research Center, researchers from Rady Children's and UC San Diego are conducting advanced stem cell research, with the goal of developing a cell-based therapy for type 1 diabetes.
Further demonstrating our commitment to Discovery is our new children's research institute next to the Hospital campus. This facility will be a central hub for all patient-based pediatric research -- including clinical trials at Rady Children's and UC San Diego -- and bring together the top physician-scientists, epidemiologists, statisticians and bioinformaticists in one location.
Currently, more than 170 clinical trials and 260 other research projects are underway at Rady Children's.
