Here are a few hints to help you and your family during your child’s hospitalization:
Ask Questions
Write down your questions whenever you think of them and discuss them with your care team. Have your questions ready when you see your doctor. Make sure you understand the answers and write them down.
Participate in Your Child's Care
Tell your nurses about your child’s likes and dislikes. Ask them what you can do to help your child. Helping with your child’s care will make you and your child feel better.
Be With Your Child
Children and parents feel best when they are near each other. Talk to your care team about staying the night. Ask family and friends to help you take care of things at home, so you can be with your child in the Hospital.
Let Your Child Know What is Happening
Tell your child ahead of time about tests and treatments using words he or she understands. Your child looks to you for honesty and reassurance. Tell your child’s siblings what is happening. Encourage them to talk about their feelings.
Be Good to Yourself
Be sure to eat, drink lots of fluids and sleep. Take time out for a walk. Go to the Parent Center, the courtyards or the chapels. Enjoy the healing gardens and the many other peaceful places around the Hospital.
If you need help from others, ask for it. If you need time for yourself, ask for that too. Talking to others about your feelings helps others know best how to support you.
