Scripps, Rady Children’s Enter Hospice Agreement

(San Diego, May 20, 2014) – Scripps Health and Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego have reached an affiliation agreement to treat children in need of end-of-life care.

“We are proud to partner with Rady Children’s Hospital to help care for these young patients,” said Scripps President and CEO Chris Van Gorder. “These children and their families are facing an incredibly difficult time. With Scripps and Rady Children’s working together, we can make it a bit easier by providing the best care possible.”

Integrated program

Through the affiliation, a specialized team of clinicians from Scripps and Rady Children’s will work together as part of a fully integrated program to provide pediatric hospice care services tailored to what’s best for each patient. The program will be operated under the Scripps Hospice license and will be under the medical direction of Kim Bower, M.D., a pediatric hospice and palliative care expert at Rady Children’s.

“Rady Children’s and Scripps have enjoyed a successful, collaborative relationship for years, partnering on neonatal care and most recently the Scripps Proton Therapy Center,” said Rady Children’s acting President Donald Kearns, M.D. “We look forward to again working with Scripps to ensure that exceptional services are available for the children and families we serve.”

Leader in hospice care

Scripps began offering hospice services in February 2013 in response to the closure of San Diego Hospice. Since then, Scripps Hospice has become one of the largest providers of hospice services in the San Diego region. Scripps Hospice builds on a foundation of experience developed through Scripps home health and palliative care services. Scripps has been offering home health services for more than 25 years, providing tens of thousands of patient visits annually. Scripps’ highly regarded palliative care program provides pain management, emotional, psychosocial and spiritual care to patients facing life-limiting illness.
