Bio

Dr. Aarti Patel is a pediatric hospitalist at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She serves as the PHM Fellowship Director and is actively involved with the education and mentorship of pediatric hospital medicine fellows. While on clinical service, she teaches pediatric and med-peds residents from UC San Diego, rotating pediatric residents from the Navy and family medicine residents from local programs, in addition to UC San Diego medical students.

She graduated summa cum laude from Temple University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She completed her medical training at Temple University School of Medicine and her pediatric residency at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. She then completed her dual PHM and Master Educator fellowships at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, during which she earned a Master's in Medical Education through the University of Cincinnati.

Dr. Patel is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, AAP Section of Hospital Medicine, and the Academic Pediatric Association. She also serves as Chair of the Marketing and Recruitment Subcommittee of the PHM Fellowship Directors' Council, 2019-21, after serving as Co-Chair 2018-19.

She has a special interest in the inpatient care of acutely ill children, medical education, and quality improvement.

Dr. Patel's research projects prior to arrival at RCHSD have included leading a team to examine teaching physical exam skills during family-centered rounds and ways to implement multimodal teaching methods in an efficient, effective and technological manner. She also served as the site co-investigator during her fellowship for "Bringing I-PASS to the Bedside: A Communication Bundle to Improve Patient Safety and Experience," a PCORI-funded, multi-centered study that evaluated the impact of a standardized family-centered rounds communication bundle on patient safety and the family experience during a hospitalization. Since arrival, Dr. Patel has been involved with improving family-centered rounds, evidence-based medicine education and mentorship, feedback training, creation and dissemination of curricula using educational technology, and quality improvement initiatives. She also serves as a site mentor for the PCORI-funded, multi-centered follow-up study of disseminating and implementing the Family-Centered I-PASS intervention at 21 additional sites.
