Dr. Erika Fernandez is board certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine and is the clinical and medical director of the neonatal intensive care unit at UC San Diego Health.

Prior to arriving in San Diego, Dr. Fernandez worked as a general pediatrician and medical supervisor for an underserved community healthcare system in New Mexico. After completing a neonatology fellowship, she then worked at the University of New Mexico, where she had various roles in research, research administration and clinical administration.

Dr. Fernandez has conducted multicenter studies in the area of adrenal function and cardiovascular instability in critically ill newborn infants and has also served on organizations and committees that support pediatric and neonatal research. She had served on the UNM Human Institutional Review Board for many years, was a member of the Clinical and Translational Science Center and participated as a member of the UNM Health Sciences Center Pediatric Research Committee. She has been very active in supporting pediatric research through organizations such as the Western Society for Pediatric Research and is currently the president-elect.

In clinical administration, she has served as the medical director for the UNM Neonatology Medical Education Outreach Program and was the conference chair of the regional Annual Amazing Newborn Conference for many years. On a national scale, she has served in many organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) perinatal section as a six-year long council member of the AAP Perinatal Section VIII; she was also the treasurer for three years as well as the 2007 conference chair for the annual regional District VIII Perinatal Conference.

Since starting at UC San Diego Health, she has been involved in over 20 committees dedicated to improving care for newborns and aims to continue providing the best possible care to newborn babies and their families.
