Dr. Hal M. Hoffman is a board-certified allergist/immunologist and chief of the Allergy, Immunology Division at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego and UC San Diego.
Dr. Hoffman received his bachelor's in biology at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He completed his internship, residency and chief residency in pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston before coming to UCSD as a postdoctoral fellow in allergy and immunology in 1994. He is now a full professor of pediatrics and medicine at UC San Diego.
Dr. Hoffman has authored more than 70 original scientific publications, largely devoted to studying the NLRP3 inflammasome and innate immunity. He has participated in numerous national and international scientific boards, including serving as a member of the advisory board for the Arthritis National Research Foundation and as secretary for both the International Cytokine Society and the International Systemic Autoinflammatory Disease Society. He is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigators and the Society for Pediatric Research as well as a fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
He has received numerous awards, including the American Lung Association of California Research Training Fellowship Award, American Lung Association of California Research Training Fellowship Award, Distinguished Fellows Asthma Education Scholarship Award, Merck Respiratory Young Investigator, AAAAI Education Research Trust Young Investigator Award, Arthritis Foundation-San Diego County Chapter Research Award and Sheldon Wolff Award for Translational Research. Most recently, Dr. Hoffman was honored with the International Society of Autoinflammatory Diseases Senior Investigator Award.
