Training in the protection of the rights and welfare of human subjects in research is a requirement of federal regulations and is a commitment for the Rady Children’s Office for Human Subjects Protection. The Office for Human Subject Protection requires that all staff and research team members involved in human subject research have basic certification in human subject protection.

In order to conduct research at Rady Children’s, completion of either the Basic Biomedical Research module or the Basic Social/Behavioral Research module through CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) is required. The modules are available at www.citiprogram.org. You will select your training based upon the type of research you are primarily involved in.

You must create a username and password to access the CITI training. You must also select UC San Diego as your Institution of record.

The modules take between 10-20 minutes each. The total anticipated time for completion of the modules is between 2-3 hours. You are able to log-in and out and do not need to complete the entire course in one sitting.

You must submit a copy of your completion history report to the Rady Children’s IRB (MC 5074) in order for it to be recorded in the Rady Children’s IRB system.

Human subject protection training is an ongoing, changing process. It is also anticipated that all investigators and staff involved in human subject research will expand their knowledge awareness as new information and material become available from the Office for Human Subjects Protection, Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other protection agencies. There are other education modules, such as Good Clinical Practices, available through CITI, and other online resources.
