Opioids are prescribed pain medications that can lead to addiction.

Talk to your doctor about ways to manage your child’s pain that do not involve prescription opioids.

Some of these ways to manage your child’s pain may actually work better and have fewer risks and side effects.

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil)
  • Distraction (arts/crafts, walking, games)
  • Warm blanket; ice packs and/or warm packs
  • Changing position
  • Massage
  • Healing touch
  • Acupuncture
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
