Dr. Caitlin Carter is the clinical director of the Division of Nephrology at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego and an associate clinical professor of pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

In her role as clinical director, she oversees the clinical operations of the division with a goal of continuing to build a program that excels in patient care, clinical research and training the next generation of pediatric nephrologists. She also sees both adult and pediatric patients, with a focus on pediatric nephrology. She cares for patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting, including patients with advanced kidney disease requiring dialysis and kidney transplant. She participates in multidisciplinary clinics, including those for children with kidney disease related to congenital heart disease and Iupus.

Dr. Carter has an interest in hereditary kidney diseases and their impact on patients and their families. She has been involved in clinical research on preventing progression of these diseases, including autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease and Alport syndrome. In addition, she has completed formal training in quality improvement and was awarded the Roger Roux award for the most impactful project at Rady Children's in 2020. She continues to lead quality improvement projects in the Nephrology division.

Dr. Carter completed her internal medicine and pediatrics residency at UC San Diego after receiving her medical degree from UC San Diego School of Medicine. She completed her adult and pediatric nephrology fellowships at UC San Diego in 2012. She is board certified in internal medicine, pediatrics, nephrology and pediatric nephrology. Dr. Carter is a member of the UC San Diego Department of Pediatrics Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee and is committed to promoting these values across her personal and professional life.

When away from her practice, she enjoys being outdoors with her family.
