His research focuses on sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (AKI), one of the most common causes of AKI in the ICU. Other research interests include steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome, protein-energy wasting in children with chronic kidney disease and the role of renal oxygenation and mitochondrial function in the pathophysiology of AKI. Dr. Nourbakhsh's work has been published in various peer-reviewed medical journals, including Nephron Clinical Practice, Pediatric Health Medicine & Therapeutics and The American Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Nourbakhsh is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP) and the American Society of Nephrology (FASN). He is a member of many professional medical societies, including the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology.
