Bio

Angela Liou, MD, is a physician-scientist and pediatric oncologist specializing in pediatric neuro-oncology, with a dual appointment at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute. Driven by a commitment to advancing cancer research and improving patient care, Dr. Liou's work focuses on developing effective therapies for children with malignant brain tumors.

Dr. Liou divides her time between conducting research in the lab of Peter Adams, PhD, at Sanford Burnham Prebys, where she investigates epigenetic vulnerabilities of pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors, and providing clinical care for pediatric oncology and hematology patients at Rady Children’s Hospital. Her research centers on understanding the biological mechanisms of H3K27M-mutant diffuse midline gliomas (DMGs)—highly aggressive and lethal brain tumors that predominantly affect young children. With no curative treatments available, she aims to uncover the molecular drivers of DMGs and identify therapeutic targets that hold potential for developing effective treatments.

Dr. Liou's cancer research began during her undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley and continued through her medical education at Duke University and fellowship training at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). At CHOP, she explored the role of epigenomic dysregulation in pediatric high-grade gliomas, supported by the Genomic Medicine T32 Training Grant, the UPenn Abramson Cancer Center K12 Career Development Award, and a Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation Grant. Her current work focuses on key genetic mutations in DMGs that drive oncogenesis, with the aim of leveraging these findings to inform targeted therapies.

Prior to her current roles, Dr. Liou completed her pediatric residency at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in San Francisco and a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at CHOP. In her clinical practice at Rady Children’s Hospital, she cares for patients within the Pediatric Neuro-Oncology and Pediatric Solid Tumor Programs, delivering expert care to children facing challenging diagnoses.
