Bio

Chris Souder, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at Rady Children’s Hospital—San Diego and specializes in orthopedic trauma as well as limb lengthening and limb reconstruction.  He is also an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Dr. Souder’s focus of practice includes the treatment of fractures and traumatic injuries, as well as limb deformities and limb differences.  This includes abnormalities secondary to traumatic injuries and infection, in addition to those associated with congenital (present at birth) and developmental conditions (secondary to growth abnormalities or bone disease).  These conditions commonly result in differences of lower extremity alignment and growth requiring treatment.  He also has a special interest in patients with complex conditions including malunion and nonunion of the upper and lower extremities.

Before joining the team at Rady Children’s Hospital—San Diego, Dr. Souder practiced for ten years in his home state of Texas.   Most recently, he served as the Director of Pediatric Orthopaedic Trauma at Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, Texas.  There, he was also an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School.  Prior to this, he was the Director of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Baylor Scott & White Health in Temple, Texas, and Assistant Professor within the Department of Orthopaedics at Texas A&M University.

Dr. Souder completed his pediatric orthopedic fellowship here at Rady Children’s Hospital–San Diego.  His internship and orthopedic surgery residency training were obtained at Scott & White Memorial Hospital/Texas A&M University Health Sciences Center.  Prior to this, he obtained both his undergraduate degree and medical degree at Texas Tech University.

He is a member of and has served as a chair of national committees focusing on pediatric orthopedic trauma and limb reconstruction.  He continues to remain active in research in these two areas and has presented both nationally and internationally.  He also has multiple publications focusing on improvement in the treatment of pediatric fractures.  In addition, he serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics and the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics-B.

Dr. Souder is an active member of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society (LLRS), and American Orthopaedic Association (AOA).

Outside of work, Dr. Souder enjoys spending time outside with his wife and four kids.
