Janine Young, M.D., F.A.A.P., is an academic general pediatrician at the University of California San Diego, where she serves as Professor of Pediatrics and Division Chief of Academic General Pediatrics, Newborn Medicine, and Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics. She is the Martin T. Stein Endowed Chair in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics.
Dr. Young completed her undergraduate studies at Columbia University and received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She completed pediatric residency training through the Boston Combined Residency Program and at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.
Her career focuses on improving health care access and outcomes for immigrant and refugee populations. She has authored peer-reviewed publications and presented nationally on topics including the development of immigrant health medical screening guidelines, evaluation and treatment of unaccompanied children, pediatric female genital cutting diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, and medical-immigration law partnerships.
Dr. Young is the UC San Diego site principal investigator for the Minnesota Department of Public Health/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers of Excellence in Newcomer Health and serves as a Medical Advisor to the CDC Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, Surveillance Branch. She is a founding member and board member of the Society of Refugee Healthcare Providers and a founding member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Immigrant Child and Family Health.
She teaches medical students and residents at the UC San Diego School of Medicine Academic General Pediatrics Clinic in Kearny Mesa and through the UC San Diego Academic General Pediatrics partnership with Family Health Centers of San Diego in City Heights.
Dr. Young is board certified in Pediatrics and is a certified medical interpreter in Spanish and French.
