Peter A. Than, MD, is a board-certified surgeon who specializes in abdominal organ (liver and kidney) transplantation in adults and children. His expertise also includes living donor organ transplantation, general surgery procedures in patients with liver and kidney disease, dialysis access surgery, and surgical treatment of hepatobiliary (liver, bile duct, and gallbladder) disorders.
Dr. Than is associate surgical director of adult kidney transplantation at UC San Diego Health. As an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery, he trains medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine.
His research investigates strategies to increase the supply of suitable organs for transplantation, develop techniques for organ assessment and improve allograft outcomes. He co-directs the Transplant Revitalization Laboratory at UC San Diego. His research has been presented at numerous national meetings and published in peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Than completed a fellowship in abdominal multi-organ transplantation at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he also completed residency training in general surgery and served as administrative chief resident. He also completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at Stanford focusing on regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and cell and gene therapies.
He is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and the American Society of Transplantation. Dr. Than is board certified in general surgery.
Outside of work Dr. Than enjoys cycling, sailing, traveling and spending time with his family.
