Praveen Raju, MD, PhD is the Nathan Gordon Chair in Neuro-Oncology and Director of Pediatric Neuro-Oncology at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine.
Dr. Raju completed MD and PhD training in Molecular Biology and Genetics with a focus on Developmental Neurobiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He then completed his Pediatrics residency training at Babies and Children’s Hospital/Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and his Pediatric Neurology fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School followed by an NIH-funded Pediatric Scientist Development Program (PSDP) research fellowship in advanced mouse genetics and developmental neurobiology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Following his clinical and research training, Dr. Raju established his initial independent faculty position at Weill Cornell Medicine in 2010 where he was the Caryl and Israel Englander Clinical Scholar in Children’s Health and provided clinical care to children on the pediatric neurology and neuro-oncology service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In 2020, Dr. Raju was recruited to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai where he established and co-directed the Children’s Brain and Spinal Tumor Center at Kravis Children’s Hospital. In addition, he also established and directed the Pediatric Neurology Residency Program and also served as Associate Director of the MD-PhD Program at Mount Sinai until his recruitment to Rady Children’s Hospital and UCSD in early 2024.
In addition to his clinical and educational duties, Dr. Raju runs a translational mouse genetics-based research lab focused on pediatric brain tumors with a recent focus on nanomedicine-based drug delivery approaches to bypass the blood-brain barrier. He has published or co-authored several research articles related to pediatric neuro-oncology including in prestigious journals such as Nature Materials, Cell Reports, JCI, Cancer Cell, Science Advances, Cell, and Immunity and has given over 45 invited lectures internationally on this topic. His research work has been funded by multiple NIH R01 grants and the US Department of Defense as well as foundation grants including from Hyundai Hope on Wheels Foundation, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Unravel Pediatric Cancer, Hartwell Foundation, American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA), Mithil Prasad Foundation, STARR Consortium, Emerson Collective, and Cookies for Kids’ Cancer among others.
