She completed her fellowship at the Shiley Eye Institute at UC San Diego and her residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital. She earned her medical degree at Emory University School of Medicine.

Among her honors and awards, Dr. Bhatia received a Cosmetic Surgery Forum grant, a pre-doctoral research training award from the National Institutes of Health /Atlanta Clinical and Translational Science Institute and a Research to Prevent Blindness pilot grant.

She speaks conversational Spanish.
