Collection Instructions

Whole blood in an EDTA lavender-top tube is also acceptable. Collect only Monday-Thursday only. Ship same day as collected. If patient has received RBC transfusion within 2 months, write "TRANSFUSED" on the request for testing. Best to draw in MORNING to avoid washed cell procedure.

Processing Instructions

If there is a delay in shipping, blood must be separated into plasma and washed, packed RBC. Try to maintain sample at colde temperature during separation and washing of RBC (not critical). Plasma: Transfer 0.2-1 mL to labeled tube (microfuge tube or screw cap plastic freezer vial). Red Cells: Wash with normal saline or PBS. Completley remove supernatant (important). Store the washed RBC and the plasma frozen. Once frozen, do not thaw. Then, ship both the plasma and washed, packed RBC on dry ice.
