Newborn Screen Card
Newborns MUST BE A MINIMUM OF 12 HOURS OLD at the time of collection. Newborns whose specimens were collected PRIOR to 12 hours of age MUST have second specimen submitted. For newborns requiring RBC trasfusion, collect the specimen prior to the transfusion even if the newborn is under 12 hours of age, however, a second specimen must be collected between 24 hours after the last transfusion and six days of age. 5 Completely saturated circles on NBS card
Be sure NBS-TRF form is completely filled out and both sides of circles are completely filled with blood. Make sure that that pink copy is given to the child's parents. If senders copy (white copy with yellow stripe) is not submitted, make a copy of the NBS-TRF form for the lab. Complete the NBS specimen transport log before sending via GSO using the provided envelope and shipping labels. GSO picks up NBS Mon-Fri between 4pm-5pm
NOTE: NBS CAN BE COLLECTED GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 24 HOURS POST TRANSFUSION BUT THE TRANSFUSION DATE MUST BE INDICATED ON THE FORM. THE TRANSFUSION WILL MASK POSSIBLE HEMOGLOBINOPATHIES AND GALACTOSE DEFICIENCIES BUT OTHER ENZYME DEFICIENCIES WILL BE DETECTED. IF A BABY WAS TRANSFUSED, THE NEWBORN SCREENING COORDINATORS WILL FOLLOW UP WITH THE ORDERING DOCTOR FOR A 90 DAY REPEAT SCREEN.
