Dr. Brendon C. Mitchell recently joined the faculty at Rady Children's Department of Orthopaedics and has an appointment as Assistant Clinical Professor with the University of California, San Diego. He is a dual fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon, having completed a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery Fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and a Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Surgery Fellowship at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute and The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado, where he received both the 1st Place Research Award in Basic Science and the Fellow Teaching Award.

Dr. Mitchell earned his B.A. in Biochemistry from Colgate University, an MSc. from Boston University School of Medicine, and his M.D. from the University of Florida College of Medicine. There he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, graduated with honors in both academic excellence and research, and received the W.F. Enneking, M.D. Award for Excellence in Orthopaedic Surgery. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at UC San Diego, where he was peer-nominated as Administrative Chief Resident and received the UCSD Resident Research Award. During residency he founded and now serves as president for BONE Academy, a non-profit outreach program that encourages students to pursue careers in orthopaedics, with chapters across the country.

Dr. Mitchell serves as a team physician for the San Diego Padres, UCSD Athletics, San Diego Seals (Premier Lacrosse League), San Diego Clippers (G-League Basketball), and US Ski and Snowboard teams. Dr. Mitchell serves on national committees for AOSSM, POSNA, and AAOS. He is a reviewer for The American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Dr. Mitchell has an extensive academic background, with more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, multiple textbook chapters, and over 100 podium and poster presentations. His research focuses on sports injuries in children, adolescents, and young adults, including ACL and meniscal injuries, osteochondritis dissecans, patellofemoral instability, and shoulder instability, and he has served as principal investigator on industry- and institution-funded biomechanical studies. He is a founding member of the ROCK-talus and KORE (knee osteotomy) multicenter research groups and an invited member of the CAPSULE, ROCK, and SPEAR study groups.

His clinical practice focuses on pediatric and adolescent sports medicine, including arthroscopic and reconstructive treatment of knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, and hip injuries in young athletes. Dr. Mitchell also maintains a clinical presence at UCSD treating adolescent and adult sports injuries.
