Dr. Collins earned her undergraduate degree from the University of California Los Angeles, graduating summa cum laude with degrees in microbiology and English literature. She completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of California San Francisco, where she earned her doctorate in biomedical sciences studying host pathogen interactions between macrophages and mycobacteria, the cause of tuberculosis. She had the unique experience of completing her thesis at Genentech when her advisor moved there. She went on to complete her pediatric residency and fellowship at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.
