Dr. Karen Michiko Kling, FACS, is a pediatric surgeon at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego and an associate professor of surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She also performs surgery on newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit at UC San Diego Medical Center.

Dr. Kling received her undergraduate degree in molecular biology at UC San Diego, graduated from medical school at Johns Hopkins, completed her general surgery training at UCLA Medical Center, and then returned to Johns Hopkins for a pediatric surgery fellowship and training in pediatric transplantation. After joining the faculty at Johns Hopkins as an assistant professor, she relocated San Diego.

Her current clinical and research interests include congenital biliary anomalies and gastroschisis. As part of her interest in gastroschisis, Dr. Kling is a member of the UC fetal consortium; she also is a member of numerous general surgery, pediatric surgery, and pediatric transplant organizations and is regularly invited to provide reviews of research publications.

Dr. Kling is also involved in surgical education and mission surgery.

Along with receiving staff appreciation awards and outstanding teaching awards, she has been named a San Diego Magazine "Top Doctor," San Diego "Super Doctor," "Best Doctor," and "America's Top Surgeon."
