Referrals to Dietitians and Outpatient Nutrition Clinics

Outpatient Clinics

Prior to requesting an appointment with a registered dietitian in the Nutrition Clinic or one of our outpatient nutrition programs, a physician referral should be faxed to the Central Authorization Department at 858-966-4051. The referral may come from a primary care provider or specialty clinic physician.

Outpatient Nutrition Clinic: Call 858-966-5999 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. to schedule

The Nutrition Clinic offers one-on-one counseling with a registered dietitian for a variety of conditions, including poor weight gain, food allergies, celiac disease, diabetes, tube feeding management and eating/feeding difficulties, as well as offering general nutrition education.

Once a referral has been faxed and insurance authorization obtain, the patient/family should call Central Scheduling at 858-966-5999 to schedule an appointment.

Weight Management Classes: Call 858-966-5999 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. to schedule

Weight management classes are divided by age and language (English and Spanish). The classes focus on promoting a healthy lifestyle through verbal presentations and interactive activities on topics including creating a balanced diet, adequate activity and behavioral modification. The patient and a parent are required to attend. Families of overweight or obese children must attend the weight management classes prior to scheduling individual appointments with a registered dietitian in the Nutrition Clinic. A physician referral for the classes is required.

Classes offered include:

  • Child/English (ages 5-11 years)
  • Child/Spanish (ages 5-11 years)
  • Teen/English (ages 12-18 years)
  • Teen/Spanish (ages 12-18 years)

Failure to Thrive Clinic: Call 858-966-4003

The Failure to Thrive Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic that evaluates infants and toddlers with poor growth and poor weight gain. It is designed to evaluate underlying medical conditions and develop nutrition care plans for patients. The clinic takes place on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month in the afternoon.

Once a referral to the Failure to Thrive Clinic has been sent and the appointment has been authorized, the family should call 858-966-4003 to schedule an appointment.

Feeding Team: Call 858-966-1700, ext. 5522

The Feeding Team program evaluates and provides treatment for infants and children with serious feeding problems. In addition to a registered dietitian, this multidisciplinary program includes a physician, a nurse practitioner, a speech therapist, an occupational therapist and a developmental psychologist.

Once a referral to the Feeding Team has been sent, the family will be contacted by a team member to learn how to continue the process.

Weight and Wellness Center: for patients seen at Rady Children, please call 858-966-4003 and select the option

A child is considered obese when his or her BMI is above the 95th percentile. Children who meet the criteria for obesity are commonly diagnosed with serious health problems, including obstructive sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes mellitus, fatty liver disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and orthopedic problems. The Weight and Wellness Center, under the direction of Jeffrey Schwimmer, M.D., manages child and adolescent obesity through safe and personalized treatments. Our multidisciplinary team through the GI Department is dedicated to reducing the health burden of obesity in children, with a focus on reasonable and achievable goals
