Some children are becoming seriously ill from COVID-19 and experiencing symptoms lasting from one to several months. This condition is referred to by various names including long COVID, chronic COVID or post-acute sequalae of SARS-CoV-2 or PASC.

A team of experts at University of California, San Diego and Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego are taking part in a national study funded by the National Institutes of Health to study the long-term effects of COVID-19 in children, young adults and their parents.

Our local study, part of the national RECOVER effort, is known as PEDS-PASS (Pediatric Epidemiology and Disparities of Post-Acute SARS-CoV-2 Study). The reason we are doing this study is to understand:

  • How COVID affects a child’s body
  • How many children feel sick for a long time after they get COVID
  • What types of symptoms and bodily changes these children who remain sick after COVID display
  • Why some people feel sick for so long

Will I be compensated?

Who is eligible to participate in this study?

  • Anyone 25 years and younger
  • People with long-term effects of COVID
  • People who completely recovered from COVID (and have no long-term effects)
  • People who never had COVID
  • Parents or caregivers of study participants

What will you be asked to do in this study?

There are three parts to the study. You and your child are being asked to complete some surveys, provide blood and saliva, and potentially participate in further testing.

What are the symptoms of long-term COVID?

Many people have effects long after they get COVID, which is caused by a virus called SARS-CoV-2. Recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection can vary from person to person and symptoms may begin at different times.
