Bio

Dr. Jay Giedd is the chair of child psychiatry at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego and the director of child and adolescent psychiatry as well as a professor of psychiatry at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He is also a professor in the Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Giedd comes to Rady Children's from the Child Psychiatry Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), where he was chief of the Section on Brain Imaging. His clinical expertise includes assessment, therapy and pharmacology management of children, adolescents and adults. His research, which is widely published, evaluates how the child's brain develops in health and illness, the factors that influence development and how to optimize treatments to take advantage of the child's changing brain. Children with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and schizophrenia are his areas of focus.

In his role at Rady Children's, Dr. Giedd seeks to integrate clinical care with research and will recruit physician-scientists who are experts in their fields. Among his numerous honors and awards are the Ruane Prize for Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Research from the Brain and Behavior Foundation and the Blanche. F. Ittleson Award for Research in Child Psychiatry from the American Psychiatric Association.
