Michael Kwon, M.D., is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Rady Children’s Specialists of San Diego and an associate clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Kwon specializes in pediatric hand and upper extremity surgery, as well as complex orthopedic trauma. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Before joining Rady Children’s, Dr. Kwon spent 14 years at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, where he established and led the pediatric hand surgery program. He is nationally recognized for his work in treating congenital hand differences, syndactyly, polydactyly, brachial plexus birth injuries, neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy, and trauma reconstruction.
Dr. Kwon earned his medical degree from MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Virginia Health System. He went on to complete dual fellowships in pediatric orthopedic surgery and pediatric hand/upper extremity surgery at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
Known for his compassionate, family-centered approach, Dr. Kwon works closely with families to support not just physical recovery, but emotional well-being—particularly for children born with visible differences. He is also deeply committed to improving access to surgical care worldwide, having volunteered in South Sudan, Haiti, Tanzania, and the Dominican Republic.
Outside of work, Dr. Kwon enjoys fly fishing, watching Eagles football, and spending time outdoors.
