Where Healing Feels Like Home

Life at the Helen Bernardy Center for Medically Fragile Children at Rady Children’s

The Helen Bernardy Center for Medically Fragile Children at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego is more than just a care facility—it’s a vibrant, joyful home where children with complex medical needs receive not only expert care but also love, laughter and the chance to just be kids.

Now in a new location on the Rady Children’s campus, the Bernardy Center is a place where children with complex medical needs are not only cared for—they are celebrated, empowered and deeply loved.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF NURSING FACILITY
The Bernardy Center isn’t like most nursing homes. It’s a special place where kids and teens with serious medical needs get round-the-clock care—and a whole lot of love.

“The Bernardy Center is a vital part of San Diego’s health care community,” says Pamela Castle, director of the Bernardy Center for 42 years. “It’s where some of our most vulnerable children receive not just medical care, but the chance to thrive, to grow and to experience the joys of childhood. It’s a place of hope, healing and heart.”

Many of the young people here use wheelchairs, breathing machines or feeding tubes. Some are healing from injuries, while others live with rare conditions like spinal muscular atrophy. But no matter what they’re facing, every child is treated like family.

The staff helps kids learn, grow and express themselves—whether that’s through talking or using assistive tech. When possible, they help kids move to homes where they need less medical support. And for those who stay longer, the goal is simple: make life as full and joyful as possible.

At Bernardy, childhood isn’t put on pause. It’s celebrated—every smile, every milestone, every moment.
