Helping Kids Heal: Chronic Pain

Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego treats chronic pain with compassion and innovation

For kids living with chronic pain, everyday activities like going to school, playing sports or even getting out of bed can feel impossible. Rady Children’s is helping these young patients manage their symptoms via a comprehensive, team-based approach that addresses not just the pain, but the physical, mental and social challenges associated with it.

The Hospital’s Chronic Pain Program provides innovative care tailored to the unique needs of each child using a nonopioid, multidisciplinary rehabilitation model. Patients work with various specialists, including rehabilitation/physical medicine physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, certified therapeutic recreation specialists and social workers—either on an inpatient or outpatient basis—to learn strategies to manage pain effectively.

Treatments include clinical methods, as well as nontraditional healing modalities, such as aquatic therapy, therapeutic yoga, music, art, massage, acupuncture and Healing Touch.

The ultimate goal is to empower kids dealing with long-term pain to regain functional independence, participate in daily routines and improve their overall quality of life.
