Leon’s Story
Congratulations to Leon, who is now cancer-free.
Leon was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 14 years old at a hospital in Saipan, where he and his family are from. When they learned he needed specialized care beyond what was available locally, Leon and his father, Leo, began a journey that would bring them far from home in search of treatment and hope.
Traveling for Specialized Care
That journey led them to Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego, where Leon could receive care through the Peckham Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders. The Peckham Center provides specialized cancer and hematology care for children and offers a full range of pediatric clinical services along with psychosocial programs and resources to support children and families from diagnosis through treatment and beyond.
For Leon and his father, traveling from Saipan to San Diego meant leaving behind the familiarity of home in order to access the care he needed. It was a major step for their family, but one taken with the hope of giving Leon the best possible chance to heal.
Strength Through Treatment
While the road through cancer treatment is never easy, Leon faced it with courage. With his father by his side and the support of his care team at the Peckham Center, he continued moving forward through each stage of treatment.
At Rady Children’s, children receiving cancer care are supported by a multidisciplinary team that helps care for both the child and the family throughout the treatment journey.
A Milestone Worth Celebrating
Today, Leon is 16 years old, has officially completed treatment and is headed home to Saipan healthy and strong. After everything he has faced, that homecoming is more than a return trip — it is a celebration of resilience, healing and the power of expert pediatric cancer care.
Leon’s story is a reminder that even when families must travel far from home for treatment, they are not alone. With the right care, support and determination, milestones that once felt distant can become reality.
