Isabella’s Story
Meet Isabella. Born at just 26 weeks and weighing less than 2 pounds, Isabella entered the world much earlier than expected and faced challenges from the very beginning. She spent 114 days in our NICU and bravely underwent a life-saving heart surgery. Through every setback, Isabella showed extraordinary strength.
A Fragile Start
Babies born this early often need highly specialized care, and Isabella’s journey was no exception. At Rady Children’s, the Neonatology program includes the region’s only Level 4 NICU, the highest level of neonatal care recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The NICU cares for the most critically ill and premature newborns and serves as a major referral center for babies with complex medical needs.
For Isabella’s family, those early days were filled with uncertainty, but also with hope. Her parents were by her side each day — reading to her, holding her when they could and celebrating every small victory. In a setting where progress can come one tiny step at a time, those moments meant everything.
Expert Care and Family Support
Rady Children’s NICU is designed not only to provide advanced medical care, but also to help families stay close and connected during a baby’s hospital stay. The program features private and semi-private rooms, including home-like spaces designed to help parents bond with their newborns. Specially designed chairs also help support skin-to-skin contact with mom and dad whenever possible.
Throughout Isabella’s 114-day stay, her care team became like family, offering comfort, guidance and reassurance every step of the way. That kind of support is a core part of NICU care. Rady Children’s also offers care coordination for select NICU families, helping them navigate complex care needs during a baby’s hospitalization and through the transition home.
Celebrating Every Milestone
For families with a baby in the NICU, milestones that might seem small to others can feel enormous. A stable day. A little more weight gain. A procedure gone well. A chance to hold your baby. Isabella’s journey was made up of those hard-fought moments, each one carrying her closer to home.
Today, Isabella is home and reaching milestones her parents once feared were still far away. Her story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of medically fragile babies, the devotion of families and the impact of expert neonatal care.
Looking Ahead
At Rady Children’s, the NICU team cares for extremely low birth weight and critically ill infants with access to a full range of pediatric medical and surgical subspecialists. For babies like Isabella, that level of specialized care can make all the difference. Isabella may have started life tiny, but her strength has always been enormous.
