Sibling Physicians Caring for San Diego’s Children
At Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego, exceptional pediatric care is often powered by teamwork. But for this physician duo, that collaboration goes even deeper. Meet Salil Upasani, MD, pediatric orthopedic surgeon, and Sayali Ranadive, MD, endocrinologist — siblings who are not only leaders in their specialties but also trusted collaborators caring for children across our San Diego and Murrieta campuses.
Different Paths to Medicine
Dr. Upasani’s path to medicine began early, inspired by time shadowing his uncle, a surgeon in Mumbai. That experience sparked a lasting interest in surgery and the profound impact it can have on patients’ lives.
Dr. Ranadive’s journey took a different route. She began her college career studying engineering before realizing she wanted a more direct connection with people. That shift ultimately led her to pursue medicine.
Today, both have built meaningful careers dedicated to providing the best possible care to children and families throughout the region.
Working Together to Treat Patients

Although they specialize in different areas, their work often intersects. Dr. Upasani treats children with orthopedic conditions such as scoliosis, while Dr. Ranadive focuses on hormonal and endocrine conditions.
In some cases, they care for the same patients — collaborating to develop comprehensive, well-rounded treatment plans.
“It’s rewarding to work together and approach patient care from different perspectives,” says Dr. Upasani.
A Stronger Bond Through Medicine
As the only two physicians in their immediate family, their shared career has strengthened their connection over time. They understand the demands of working in healthcare and support each other through it.
Their bond deepened further during their time living together in Los Angeles, when Dr. Ranadive was in medical school and Dr. Upasani was completing his undergraduate studies.
“We’re able to support each other because we understand the demands of this career,” says Dr. Ranadive.
Caring for the Same Community

Working at the same hospital makes their connection even more meaningful. Whether they’re consulting on complex cases or sharing insights, their collaboration benefits both their patients and each other.
“At the end of the day, we’re siblings who support each other. Now we get to do that while caring for the same community,” says Dr. Upasani.
