A Teddy Bear Clinic Turns a Hospital Visit Into an Adventure at Rady Children’s
In honor of Child Life Month in March, something pawsitively magical happened at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. The Hospital’s Child Life team hosted a Teddy Bear Clinic, turning a clinical visit into an adventure full of learning, laughter and lots of cuddly care.
Patients were invited to bring along their favorite stuffed friends for a check-up because even teddy bears need care sometimes. With bandages, toy stethoscopes and lots of imagination, kids became the caregivers while learning what really happens during hospital visits. It was a bear-y sweet way for kids to understand and be more comfortable with the process.
What Is a Child Life Specialist?
Child life specialists are trained healthcare professionals who help children and their families understand and cope with the hospital experience. They use play, education and emotional support to make sure kids feel safe, brave and prepared.
By “helping” their teddy bears, patients practiced what they might see or feel during their own care, building confidence every step of the way.
At Rady Children’s, child life specialists meet children where they are, taking into account each child’s age, personality and unique needs.
Learning Through Play
At the Teddy Bear Clinic, kids explored real medical tools and common procedures in a fun, hands-on way. By “helping” their teddy bears, patients practiced what they might see or feel during their own care, building confidence every step of the way.
Play is powerful! Through games, crafts and role-playing, kids learned:
- What medical equipment does to support their care
- How doctors and nurses help them feel better
- That it’s okay to ask questions and share their feelings
- And, most importantly, they discovered they’re not alone
Because Every Child Deserves Comfort
From teddy bear check-ups to heartfelt support, Child Life Services helps turn moments of worry into moments of courage. Thanks to this amazing team, kids can focus on what they do best: just being kids.
