NASCAR drivers visit Rady Children’s ahead of the big race
As anticipation built for the inaugural NASCAR competition in Coronado and the roar of engines drew near, drivers, children and families shared meaningful moments of laughter and connection away from the racetrack.
NASCAR drivers Christopher Bell and Ryan Preece recently visited Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego, bringing with them smiles, comfort and a welcome break from the usual hospital routines.
A Visit That Meant More Than Racing
The drivers spent time at the bedsides of young patients, delivering special NASCAR-themed “Speedy Bears” and activity books. The visit was part of a larger community outreach effort tied to the NASCAR race weekend in Coronado, which took place June 19-21.
Bell and Preece didn’t just drop off gifts. They took the time to connect with each patient through conversations, jokes and simply being present. They turned an ordinary day into something memorable for patients and families alike.
More Than a Race Weekend
While the race brought excitement to the region, it also highlighted another side of NASCAR, one focused on community and compassion.
The hospital visit was part of a broader effort that included activities at Naval Base Coronado aimed at connecting the sport with the community in meaningful ways.
Such Visits Can:
• Lift spirits during a difficult time
• Create lasting, positive memories
• Help kids feel seen and supported
• Remind families that they are not alone
Giving Back to the Community
Giving back was a key part of NASCAR’s presence in San Diego, especially as the region prepared to host its first-ever race weekend. The visit was organized in partnership with The NASCAR Foundation, which also made a donation to support care at Rady Children’s.
Hospital visits from professional race car drivers can help a child facing a serious illness or long hospital stay momentarily forget the challenges ahead.
NASCAR is built on speed, precision and competition. But at Rady Children’s, it was about slowing down, showing up and making a difference, one child, one smile and one Speedy Bear at a time.
