The Helen Bernardy Center at Rady Children’s Receives Highest Possible Rating

San Diego – February 26, 2013 – For the fifth consecutive year, the Helen Bernardy Center for Medically Fragile Children at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego has received the highest possible overall rating of five stars in U.S. News & World Report’s fifth annual Best Nursing Homes, available exclusively at

The Best Nursing Homes 2013 ratings highlight the top nursing homes in each city and state, out of nearly 16,000 facilities nationwide.

“Fewer than one out of every five nursing homes got an overall rating of five stars,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. “Those who require nursing care deserve the best available, and these are homes that merit their consideration by demonstrating such high quality.”

“We are thrilled to be ranked among the nation’s best for the fifth consecutive year,” said Pamela Dixon, Director of the Helen Bernardy Center for Medically Fragile Children at Rady Children’s. “This honor would not be possible without our highly skilled interdisciplinary team of caregivers. They work diligently to provide effective, individualized care to each of our residents every day. “

Registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, licensed respiratory therapists, and certified nursing assistants provide 24-hour nursing care to all residents at the Bernardy Center. Attending physicians monitor all residents regularly, at which time the resident’s treatment plan and any specialist recommendations are reviewed.

Best Nursing Homes draws on data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a federal agency that assesses homes in three categories—health inspections, level of nurse staffing, and quality of care—and gives each an overall rating.

U.S. News awarded the “Best Nursing Home” designation to homes that earned an overall rating of five stars from CMS in January 2013.
