Ruby and Luke’s Story: Two Siblings, Two Journeys, One Incredible Family

Meet Ruby and her big brother, Luke — two brave fighters who beat leukemia.

Luke’s Diagnosis

Luke was diagnosed the day after Christmas in 2018 at just 8 years old. What followed were nine long months of treatment, appointments and uncertainty. Then came the moment his family had been hoping and praying for: Luke reached remission.

Not long after, the family received another life-changing surprise — Ruby was on the way. After everything they had been through, her arrival brought joy and hope for the future.

Ruby’s Journey

But in a heartbreaking turn, Ruby was diagnosed with leukemia on Christmas Day 2021, when she was just 18 months old. Once again, the family found themselves facing the unimaginable.

Their journeys were not easy. There were ICU stays, transplants and intense treatments. There were moments of fear, exhaustion and heartbreak. But there were also moments of hope that carried them forward.

Finding Hope in the Hardest Moments

One of those moments came when Ruby went into spontaneous remission before her CAR-T therapy. In the midst of such a difficult road, it was a powerful reminder that even in the hardest chapters, there can still be light.

Throughout both children’s treatment, the family found support at Rady Children’s and the staff at the Peckham Center, where care and compassion helped carry them through.

“Going through an impossible situation, every parent’s worst nightmare, it felt like the world was crashing in. But, we quickly realized how lucky we were to have Rady Children’s & the staff at the Peckham Center — they became family. There are so many wonderful memories, but both kids ringing the bell surrounded by the ones we love will forever hold a special place,” says Mom.

Ringing the Bell

For both Luke and Ruby, ringing the bell marked more than the end of treatment. It was a celebration of everything they had endured, the strength they showed and the love that surrounded them every step of the way.

For their family, those moments will always stand as lasting reminders of resilience, hope and what it means to keep going even when the road feels impossible.

Thriving Today

Today, Luke is 14 and thriving. He is taking honors classes, playing baseball and guitar, and serving as treasurer at his school. Ruby is almost 5, singing constantly, loving her Barbies and living joyfully.

Their story is one of courage, perseverance and the extraordinary bond of family. Together, Ruby and Luke are a powerful reminder that even after the hardest battles, joy can still shine through.
