In the Neurophysiology lab at Rady Children’s Hospital we complete clinical assessments and research using objective testing of the peripheral and central auditory pathways. We use this clinical information to better estimate hearing thresholds and improve patient outcomes.
The Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER or ABR) as well as the Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) tests are methods of testing the auditory system when a hearing test cannot be performed behaviorally. These tests are recommended when a child cannot be assessed behaviorally because the child is too young. Another reason they might be recommended is if the child cannot cooperate or complete diagnostic hearing testing. The BAER/ASSR test is done while the child/baby is asleep and relaxed. This can be performed using natural sleep for children one year or younger. For children over one year of age, this testing is completed using sedation.

Our team also offers Cortical Evoked Response Testing. This is another objective test that allows us to measures the brain’s response to sound stimuli. This test allows us to identify hearing thresholds and optimize hearing derives such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant.
