What Can I Expect?

  • Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time for registration.
  • Rady Children’s Gastroenterology (GI) and Nutrition Clinic is part of a teaching institution. Due to the number of providers your child may see, your appointment may take up to three hours.
  • In addition to the physician, your child may also be seen by a medical student, nurse practitioner, nurse, nutritionist and social worker.
  • We appreciate your understanding and patience and will make every effort to see your child promptly.

What Should I Bring to the Appointment?

  • Any laboratory reports, x-rays or medical records that are relevant.
  • Insurance co-pay.
  • Snack foods, toys, books, homework, change of clothing and/or diapers (depending upon the age of your child), and a sweater or jacket. All of these items will help your child feel more comfortable during the visit.

Where Can I Park?

Due to construction, there is limited parking in front of the Outpatient Subspecialties Building (Building 28). Please refer to the Maps & Directions section for the latest parking information.

Rady Children’s also provides validated valet parking for families here for a visit. Valet parking check-in is in front of the Rose Pavilion (near the Sam S. and Rose Stein Emergency Care Center).

How Do I Schedule a Follow-up Appointment?

  • We recommend that you schedule a follow-up appointment  at the check-out area before you leave the Clinic.
  • If you are unable to schedule at the end of your visit, please call Central Scheduling at  858-966-5999 or 800-543-7456 as soon as possible.

What Should I Do If My Child Has Urgent Problems Between Scheduled Appointments?

  • Contact your pediatrician or primary care doctor to determine if he or she can help you with the problem.
  • For urgent problems between the hours of 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, call 858-966-4003.
  • For emergencies after business hours, weekends and holidays, call 858-966-1700 and ask to speak with the gastroenterologist on call.

How Can I Get Medication Refills?

Please notify your pharmacist at least five days before you run out of medication. The pharmacist will contact our staff to handle this.

How Does My Pediatrician Get Information about this Appointment?

  • After this visit, the physician or nurse practitioner will dictate a letter or report that is sent to your pediatrician.
  • Your pediatrician will work with our team to follow through on the recommendations.
  • Your pediatrician or primary care physician remains your primary care provider.

How Do I Obtain the Results of Any Laboratory Studies or X-rays that Have Been Ordered?

  • Test results are usually available after one week. There may be a delay in obtaining results if the studies were not performed at Rady Children’s.
  • For patient seen at Rady Children, please call 858-966-4003 and select the option for the appropriate nurse. For studies done outside of Rady Children’s, please request results be faxed to our Clinic at 858-966-7932
  • For patient seen at our Escondido location, please call 858-966-1700, ext. 256086 for the nurse line.  At the time of the study, please request results to be faxed to our Escondido clinic at 760-294-9263.
  • For patients seen at our Encinitas or Murrieta location, please call 858-966-4003.  At the time of the study, please request results to be faxed to 858-560-6798.
