Diabetes and Pediatric Psychology

Our endocrinology pediatric psychology service is led by Eve Nguyen, Ph.D and offers evidenced based interventions (e.g., Cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, problem solving skills training) and support for coping with diabetes. This may involve working with youth to develop strategies to adjust to their new diagnosis of diabetes, improve adherence, and family-based collaboration to improve their health and quality of life.

Youth with chronic illnesses such as diabetes often face several challenges. Pediatric psychologists can help children:

  • Adapt to their diagnosis.
  • Manage changes in their treatment and environment.
  • Address comorbid behavioral concerns (e.g., depression and anxiety) that impact diabetes management.
  • Improve social and emotional well-being.
  • Improve adherence to treatment regimens.
  • Identify triggers for diabetes-related burnout and fatigue.
  • Develop strategies to decrease stress.
  • Address family-related distress around the management of a chronic illness.

ADAPT Group:

This is an online coping and skills-based group for teens that is delivered in collaboration with our psychology and child life teams to teach coping skills for youth with Type 1 diabetes and to gain peer support.
